Social Work

The Bachelor of Arts in Social Work degree program at the University of South Alabama provides a combination of academic excellence and commitment to social justice within a vibrant and friendly atmosphere. Social work majors are taught by talented faculty and field experts in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work in the College of Arts and Sciences. The program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education to prepare students for generalist social work practice in areas such as child welfare, mental health, family services, public health, criminal justice and substance abuse treatment.

Social work students enroll as pre-professional majors, first completing required liberal arts courses and achieving the minimum GPA for admission to the major. Once in the professional major, social work students develop skills and techniques for generalist practice with individuals, families, groups and communities. During the senior year, social work students intern in social service agencies across the Gulf Region. After earning a bachelor’s in social work at South, graduates are eligible to apply for advanced standing master’s in social work programs across the country.
